Welcome August!

Welcome August!

The first week of August hangs at the very top of summer, the top of the live-long year, like the highest seat of a Ferris wheel when it pauses in its turning. The weeks that come before are only a climb from balmy spring, and those that follow a drop to the chill of autumn, but the first week of August is motionless, and hot. It is curiously silent, too, with blank white dawns and glaring noons, and sunsets smeared with too much color. Often at night there is lightning, but it quivers all alone. ~Natalie Babbitt, Tuck Everlasting

I don't have any special plans for August.  Do you?

  1. Hi Penny, We are off to a cabin in the GA. mountains for a few days of trout fishing, reading and wine tasting. Will be looking forward to having you over for dinner. Will be in touch when we get back.
    Hugs, Penny

  2. What a wonderful quote. We plan to spend more time in the mountains and will entertain guests there a few days. Summer weather by the Bay often lasts through Sept. and maybe even Oct.

  3. I love your sunflowers! August has changed from what we had planned. We had a wonderful trip planned to California, including my college reunion. We've had to change the plans and do things closer to home. Have dear friends arriving later this month. Working to get my vintage trailer put together so I think we will be busy!

  7. Not after next weekend! That quote is such a perfect description of August. The very highest that summer can go before plummeting toward fall. It's the last chance to enjoy summer and I'll probably spend it in my garden.

  8. I was thinking in my head how poetic of a post you wrote. :) And then I saw the quote. Quite lovely, Penny!

Not sure what this month will bring other than work. Maybe a small trip out of town.

    Enjoy August!

  11. LOTS of plans!

Tomorrow my youngest and her gal entourage (bridal party) are going with her for a ladies luncheon and then wedding dress shopping!

Sunday is the Parade of Homes! This weekend is The Dublin Irish Fest.

The 9th is eldest daughter's and also my older brother's birthdays (born on same days.)

Lots of fun to be had!

  12. I think I will have plenty to keep me busy through August - but unless we get some sunshine soon to brighten up this so-called Summer, I may just run away! Fields of golden sunflowers would be welcoming - my crop consists of two - plus miles of blue lavender would cheer me - mine has drowned and rotted in all the rain!

How are the mountains these days Penny?

    Hugs - Mary

  13. No plans here, Penny, although I wouldn't be against doing something. Even a long weekend. I can't believe it is August already. The winter should go by this fast!

  14. Hi Penny, lovely quote for August. This month is always vacation time for us. We celebrate our son's birthday and our anniversary too.
Then before you know it, it's fall.
This summer flew by didn't it?
    Lovely sunflower photo.
    Happy August!

  15. I love August! It usually means a turn in weather ever so slightly ... at least on the ESVA. Plenty of good weather for lots of porch sitting :-) Hope your August is wonderful!

  16. I LOVED that quote you shared about August. Perfect!

We're enjoying our first couple of days here. Our sunflowers (all volunteer from the bird feeders) are growing leaps and bounds. It's a treat to share the seeds from the mature heads later on.. the birds really like to poke in there.

    Wishing you enJOYable days ahead.

  18. Good morning Penny, I'm back!!! I have missed you and blogging so much. However, a break was a serious need. I have lots of catching up to do though.

Love the sunflowers and August is so close to the coming Fall. My only plans after a crazy busy summer, is to relax and enjoy some quiet time.

    Have a great week.
    Hugs,
    Jeanne

  19. August is one of my least favorite months. It is hot and sticky and school starts back which can create tension around here. Everything will getting back on schedule (which is nice) but it still creates more work. Don't have anything "fun" planned at the moment.

  20. Oh my goodness, do I have plans for August! I will have to find a new house or face winter in a rental. If and when I find a new place I will be going through ALL of your old posts - so much inspiration there!
