Guest Bedroom Mini Makeover Reveal

Last May, I showed you the guest bedroom reveal.  I have to confess, I was never really happy with it.  The layout was crowded and it just seemed blah.  You can see that post here.

One of the things I didn't like was the oak sleigh bed.  We have had that bed since 2002.  I loved it the, in my old farmhouse.  The oak seemed to fit in with my style back then.  You can see how it looked in the farmhouse master bedroom back in 2002 here.

I finally decided to paint it.  Here is the guest bedroom now, with the newly painted bed.

You might notice that we changed the bedroom layout around too.  Here is the old look, below.

We removed the wicker trunk that was taking up too much room.  The table on the right side of the bed in the picture above moved out to the foyer and got a paint job, you can see that here.

The red hutch that used to be in the foyer, is now housing some books and a TV in the bedroom.

We found a vintage mirror and hung it over the headboard along with some red transferware plates.

If you look closely at the picture above you will see that I painted the base of the lamp on the left side of the bed.    You can see it in it's original state on the second picture of this post and the right side of the bed.  Are you getting confused yet?

Something new in the room is the vintage grain sack pillow that I purchased from Ann at On Sutton Place.  It is perfect in the room.  You can visit Ann's blog here, or her ESTY site here.

So there you have it.  A mini makeover for the guest room.

  1. You used one of my favorite color combinations again! Do you mind me asking where you got the quilt and shams? I have red toile in my bedroom and we need a new coverlet.

  10. I would hardly call painting a whole bed a mini makeover. The room looks wonderful. When we get back to Lake Lure I am going to start painting up a storm. We are in Cary right now. Snowstorm coming. Will get back to Florida on Saturday.

  18. Hi Penny, your makeover is gorgeous. I love the red toile and have a guest room with it too and I think even the same toile quilt. I love your mirror over the bed with the plates. The TV and book hutch is beautiful and such a great anchor for the room.
The bed painted white is so fresh and bright. Love it all. What a great job. Anyone would love to stay in this room.

  19. Ooooh, it looks great, Penny! Love both lamps white and you know I love your shades. : ) The red armoire looks great in here, too.

The plates look really good around the mirror. I'm thinking that may be the way I go, around the mirror I put in our dining room. Mine is round, but in that antique gold color with detailing I just love. I am going to think over some plates I already have otherwise I guess I'm looking for some brown and white transferware ones!

  20. Very nicely done -- I think the changes are just right, especially the addition of the red cabinet in the room and the transfer ware over the bed. I do like the bed painted, too.

  23. It's such a welcoming guest room. I love the bed painted white. We have oak furniture in our room, from my in-laws, and my husband won't hear of it being painted. Sigh. Love the lamps and the new pillow. Everything works together in harmony.

  31. I've searched everywhere to find a red quilt like you have at the end of your bed. I absolutely love it. Any idea where I could find one?

  32. I love the red combo , very nice.
But as former feng shui consultant, the dishes above the bed are a little unnerving. I'd suggest moving them just off the bed . Not too be critical. But if you were sleeping in that bed you might be concerned about a dish falling even if they are totally secure, as I'm sure they are. It's still the suggestion.

  33. I'm back - trying to catch up a little at a time! I love the way your room turned out. The bed and lamp are wonderful. I would like to paint the old, oak furniture that belonged to my sweetheart's parents. It's in our bedroom but it lacks life. He doesn't want me to paint it so I won't. Your room is so cozy and comfy. Everything is just right!

  34. Guest room, huh. Where do I go to make a reservation? Red/white toile, ticking, patchwork . . . could it ever get any better?. Re: red/white quilt shown on bed, JCP had one similar a few years
ago in the short-lived American Home line. It was called the postage stamp quilt. MY BFF forced me to buy it for her for Xmas one year LOL. Perhaps E bay?
