The Dining Room Curtains

I finished sewing the dining room curtains a few days ago.  Then we had to rearrange a little bit of furniture and change some the the art on the walls to make everything work.

I tried taking pictures on a sunny day and on a cloudy day.  The window in the dining room makes it hard to get a good picture of the curtains.  Here they are.

The fabric has gold, red and green in a plaid pattern.  It is called Burgess Plaid Antique Red.

It is the perfect color combination for my home.  I read recently on someones blog (sorry, I don't remember who) that red, gold and green were not in style anymore in French Country design.  Sorry, but I don't believe it.  I do enjoy seeing French Country in grays, creams and whites, but I still love my color.

I am a firm believer in decorating in a style that makes you happy.  Red, green, gold and blue make me happy.  Besides, they are the colors found in nature and does nature ever go out of style?

What colors make you happy?

One must absolutely decorate with the colors that make her happy. Too much blue, gray or neutrals depress me. I need some color. Course you know that yellow is my favorite.g

Your curtains are so pretty Penny. I'm 100% with you on the color love. I will not part with red, green, and gold.

Oh I so agree with you, I love these colors and they will never be out of style to me. I think the curtains are perfect. Besides, they only change the colors to make people buy something new. I don't go along with that at all. Hugs, Marty

Your curtains are perfect! You've found your style - don't let anyone make you think it's out of style. It's your style - and it's just right! I love the way your home is coming together.

I agree with you. Who are these people to make statements like this? Even if professional decorators, they should know better than that. White-gray-cream, in an entire room canbe boring, let alone an entire house. And it would require a live-in housekeeper, too. xo

I love the curtains and the way they pick up the colors in the picture and the planting pot. I think people that make statements like that just don't see the big picture beyond what they like themselves. Your home is warmly lovely! xo Diana

Penny, you are checking off these projects. The curtains look great. Definitely need to live with the colors that make us happy. I think this is a beautiful room!

Your curtains turned out so pretty. The red in them really pulls out the red in the rug and painting in the room. Good choice on the fabric!

Great job on the curtains, Penny...I wouldn't change a thing! They pull everything in your dining room together perfectly. Were they difficult to make? Did you use a pattern?

The white and greys and pretty in photos, but I would be adding color in no time at all. I think people should have the colors they like around them, the ones that make them happy. My house is pretty much a riot of color, and I like it that way!

see you there! said...

Your curtains are perfect for your room. Colors go in and out of fashion but style is a different thing in my book. Your house reflects your own particular style and does it beautifully.

It all looks beautiful. I think there is nothing in decorating that is off limits if you love it. Some colors and looks are classics and frankly, as much as I love looking at the white and grey interiors that are popular now, how boring it would be if we all jumped on the same bandwagon! Your decorating has always exuded warmth and welcoming comfort. I think that is what we all love about it!
I will always love reds, blues, yellows and brilliant colors. They are colors that make me happy, and beyond what is in or out at the moment, that is what decorating is all about.

Penny they look fabulous, pulling all the colors from that beautiful painting and the greens from your furniture and chair seat fabric. Definitely you, I know how you love color.......the room looks so bright and cheery and just waiting for one of your scrumptious meals to be set on the table!!!!

Yes!!! You should use the styles and colors that you love! Why live with something that you may not be in love with, but is "in style"?
As you said nature doesn't go out of style. Red, green, gold and blue make me happy too! I love what you have done. The wall color is awesome and your new curtains are lovely.

Those colors are French country to me, not all that bland stuff you see nowadays. Your curtains and the whole room are beautiful! What is the paint color of your walls? Want to repaint my kitchen and need choices.

The room looks wonderful, Penny. I love crisp plaids!

Pale yellow is the color that makes me most happy. I love it as a base and background color. In our bedroom I used it as a background, and I added creams and whites because I find the neutral look restful. In other rooms I like to add raspberry, navy, golds and greens to the mix.

It is all about what brings us joy. And, you, my friend, bring joy to us.

I don't believe it either, Penny. Doesn't Charles Faudree decorate with those colors? I love the drapes and the fabric you chose for this room. I love that little console piece near the window. It looks like it is narrow enough to fit in my small entry. It's going to be either something like that or a narrow bench {since this would be behind the door}.

I learned the hard way that your decor should reflect the things you love...no matter what. Trying to be fake never works. I adore your colors. The panels are a lovely shade of red and the way they pick up on the red in the painting is perfect. It's really looking like home isn't it?

You are doing a beautiful job on the house Penny. The dining room is so warm and inviting. I love all of your colors. Can hardly wait to get back to NC and see it all.

Penny, ignore those people, and decorate in whatever makes you happy! Room looks great, by the way. I'm a blue and white kind of girl, with lots of other colors used as little sparks of color here and there. Enjoy your day! ;)

Your home is beautiful. Some folks confuse trends with style. Your home oozes your personal style. It is warm and inviting. You asked what colors make me happy-green, purple, yellow, with touches of red. Copper is my metal of choice. I drift in and out of trend, but those are my colors!
I love your blog, btw. :-)

I think your new curtains are perfect, they go so well with your paint and the painting. I just did a post too on the colors that I love, red, yellow and green are my favorites. I think I read every week about "someone" saying those colors are dated, but I agree with you ~ I think they are timeless and cheerful. I say decorate with what makes your heart sing!

Eileen said...

They look wonderful, Penny! I really love the fabric. The whole room is warm and inviting. I have the same problem photographing my dining room curtains - I have tried every time of day and type of weather and it's just nearly impossible to get a good photo of them. I love your colors and I think as long as it makes you happy, that's what matters. Trends come and go and I usually pay them little attention.

Shirley@Housepitality Designs said...

Love your new drapes...and if those colors are not "in" anymore in the French Country design, then someone needs to let Charles Faudree know...still see those beautiful warm colors in his designs...and I love them too!!

Lookin' good, Penny. I agree with the people who say you should use whatever colours make YOU happy. As you say, how can colours found in nature ever go out of style?

I love those colors too. My house is full of them. Seeing a lot of orange and turquoise around though. We all must do what makes us happy and content. Mimi

I think your room looks great, and I love the colors.

We were in France last October, and there are plenty of reds, yellows, blues, and some greens in the shops in Provence. But I also window-shopped at a pretty store in Lyon that was more about linen and washed-out grays paired with stained wood. It all depends on the region of France.

My LR drapes are the Bosporous toile and my accent pillows are in your plaid fabric. I'm going to use this for my DR drapes now...don't know why I didn't think of that before. I love this plaid and love COLOR, I dislike the grey that I see everywhere, it's not cheerful at all. Love your DR!!

The curtains are amazing for that painting. It picks up all the colors in the painting and finishes off the room perfectly.

I love yellow and blue, but I am also in love with pastels. Color can really make me happy.

Hi Penny, red, green and gold make me very happy. Those colors are in a large part of my home too. Your curtains look fabulous. So does your dining room. It all works together perfectly. Nice job.

Yes, we did get a good bit of snow. It started melting today. Spring is peeking out though right through the snow. smile. I am very anxious to start gardening and cleaning up out side. I trimmed my rose bushes and didn't get the branches put away. The snow made them look so weird. Mounds of snow all over the place. The wind was bad too. The sun is shining and it will be 49 today. Much better than 21 like last night.

Stay warm,
Jeanne xo

I had a purple/blue kitchen when nobody had a purple/blue kitchen. People gasped... so did I... but for totally different reasons. This is the first time in 20 years I don't have a purple/blue kitchen. Now I love white, gray, cherry red, turquoise, gold, and a shock of cobalt blue here and there. Never greens, maroons or navy. No pinks. No black, white and red. Sometimes orange if it's coral orange.

Colors are amazing ~

I'm with you....I love color whether it's in style or not...red ofcourse is the best of all...I love balloon shades and recently someone told me I was crazy to even consider them because no one uses them anymore....who cares I love them...and they will be in red!!

Gorgeous Penny! Who cares what's in or out - if we all decorated by what's in we'd probably have white on white on white rooms! Which would so bore me.
