House Hunters Day 1

Yesterday I went out with my Realtor (who is wonderful, by the way!) and looked at several houses.

As promised, I am taking you along on this house hunting journey with me.

This first house was lovely, but in the woods and very dark inside.  I crave light and I need it to take good blog photos for my food blog.  So it was a pass.
This house below was in the same neighborhood as the first and again too dark inside.

Love the first floor of the house below.

But to get to the downstairs level you needed to use this spiral staircase (great if you are in your 20's - not so much when in your 50's-60's).  You could also go outside and come in an outdoor entrance, but not practical for us.

Another lovely home below, but the garage was a drive under, which meant climbing up and down stairs with groceries etc.  Not what I am looking for in my forever home.

So we continue to look.  We are meeting our Realtor tomorrow AM for 3 more houses.  Wish us luck!

House Hunting

A few posts back I mentioned that in my next home I wanted to create a lounge area next to my kitchen, instead of a eat-in area.  You can read about that here, if you missed it.

A few of you thought that meant I was designing a brand new home to build.

That is not the case.  We have made the decision not to build a new home, but to buy an existing home and then customize it to make it ours.  So we are beginning our house hunt.

Do you all want to come along with me like you did for my last house?

Here are a few of the homes I have seen so far.  The pictures are from the MLS.
475 South Church Street Unit N, Hendersonville, NC.
This one is a condo, downtown above business.  Kind of urban chic.  We are trying to decide if we want to continue maintaining a yard or not.  Could you live in a condo?

218 Claymoor Court, Flat Rock, NC.

This one is a "stand alone" condo in a golf course community.  It is a single home, but there are association dues that you pay and the association maintains the lawn and outside of your home.

The first condo was lovely, but dark inside.  I need a light filled home.

The second one was really pretty with mountain views off the back deck, but the association dues were higher than we would like to pay.

On Wednesday, I am going out with my Realtor, to look at single family homes  as opposed to condos.  I will take pictures and share them with you.

This and That

So what are you doing today?

I am sitting on my front deck, catching up on reading some of my favorite magazines.

Looking at my tomato plant that is slowly stopping production.

And watching all of the beautiful butterflies, flit around the butterfly bushes at the edge of the deck.

A perfect way to spend a waning summer day, don't you think?

So, what are you doing today?

A Day Trip and Barely a Bear

The other day I visited our local Arboretum.  I love going there, because I can get wonderful gardening ideas.

How fun would it be to have a moss roof on your garden shed?

We were there early in the morning and the dew was still on this spider web, sparkling like diamonds.

The setting is just beautiful, as you can see from the picture above.  The mountains are peaking out behind one of their smaller greenhouses.

The main reason I went to the Arboretum this time was to view their amazing Bonsai exhibit.

Now for the "Barely A Bear" part of this post.  A few of you have asked if I have seen any more bears.  Yes, I have.  In fact this cute teeny, about the size of a beagle, baby bear decided he wanted to drink the water in the bird bath in our side yard.

Now this birdbath is a standard size, about 2 feet wide, so you can see how tiny he really was.

I took this pictures from our front deck in a hurry.  Mr. Comforts watched my back, as we were thinking that the mommy bear would be near by.  She never showed herself and the baby bear hopped down after a few minutes and walked back into the woods.

On another note, for those of you who requested it, I now have a Linky Follower on my From Harvest To Table blog, so you can follow me there too.  I posted a new recipe today that was delicious!

From Harvest To Table

I have some exciting news to share!  I have started a new blog called From Harvest To Table.

I have always loved to cook and entertain.  After going to Italy and France over the last few years, I really became interested in cooking  fresh from the market dinners.

I am lucky to have several farmers markets near me, but I bet you all have them near you too.  If not a farmers market, you probably have road side stands or grocery stores that carry local products in a certain part of the store.

If you are a long time reader, you know I have always created a garden where ever I lived.  Even in this temporary home, where there was not a place to build a garden, I have managed to have fresh tomatoes, lettuce and herbs.

So it was only natural that I created my new blog.  A place to share my recipes, trips to the farmers market, local meat and dairy farms and even some local vineyards with you.

I will be keeping The Comforts of Home blog too.  I will still post about my decorating, furniture painting, house hunting, house whispering and life in general, here.

I hope you visit me at my new blog, From Harvest To Table.  It is a Word Press blog.  You can follow From Harvest To Table through Google Reader, or through an email subscription on my side bar on the From Harvest To Table blog.

So if you have time, please stop by my new blog and leave a comment to let me know you were there.
Welcome Home,

Kitchen Table or Kitchen Lounge?

As you all know, for the past several years, Mr. Comforts and I have bought many homes to House Whisper to.  We would live in them, fix them up, tweak them a little more and then after 2-5 years we would sell them and start all over.

Now we are ready to buy our forever home.  I won't have to worry, if the next buyer will like what I have done or not.  I can be totally me.

Since my children all long grown and on their own, I have been giving a lot of thought about the need for two eating areas in our home.

Most homes have a kitchen dining area and a formal dining area.  Here was our kitchen eating area at our last home...

and here was our formal dining room in our last home...

In our next home, I don't want a kitchen dining area.  I want a kitchen lounge area.  Similar to this idea below...

Mine will not be this formal, but you get the idea, right?  A place to sit, read the paper and have a cup of coffee in the morning.  A place for guests to sit, sipping a glass of wine and nibbling on appetizers while you finish up dinner.  Notice the comfy seating and the lower than dining height, table?

I am going to have fun finally creating a home just for the two of us.

Chicken Wire

A few years ago, I bought a wicker and chicken wire 3 tier basket for my kitchen.  This is what it looked like...

It was wonderful and I loved it, but when we moved into this house and I unpacked it, it was broken.

I got it at Pottery Barn and they didn't sell it anymore, so I hunted around for a replacement.  I loved the chicken wire and was happy when I found this one at World Market.

It doesn't have the wicker, and that is OK with me.  This one has more basket space.  I am very happy with the replacement.

Happy Monday!

Bear With Me

Since moving to this rental house, I have shown you pictures of deer, blue birds and turkeys taken from my back sliding door.

This is what I saw this morning when I looked out the back door.

A bear cub!

Right after I took the first picture, it walked away into the woods.

To put things into perspective, in the picture below you can see how close he is to our back deck.

Now, I am a little nervous to go out for my daily walk.  This is just a cub,  I think the mother had to have been around somewhere. I think I will be using a treadmill until winter, when hibernation time comes around.

I also think that when I am looking for our next home to buy, no matter what the style, it probably won't be in the woods....:-).
