A Celebration!

Tonight I am going over to a friend's house for a celebration dinner.  You see, my friend was diagnosed with breast cancer several months ago.

After having a mastectomy, she endured several weeks of chemo, followed by several weeks of radiation.

Today was her last radiation treatment.  Now her life will get back to her new normal.

I'm bringing these flowers to her, to help her celebrate.

Ladies....go get your YaYa's checked....please!

Mosaic Kits

I have been asked in the past, if I ever would consider putting together kits for mosaics, so I decided to try a few.

One of the simplest yet prettiest things to mosaic are vintage silver trays.  So I thought I would try to put together a few kits for silver trays.

The silver trays are not included in the kit, but can be found easily at thrift stores and antique stores.  What IS included in the kit is a FREE copy of my "How To Mosaic A Tray" Ebook.

If you every wanted to try mosaics, but didn't want to buy the nippers or were afraid to cut the china, these kits are perfect for you.

I will be adding more kits over the next few days.  I will be making some kits with transferware plates too.

They can be purchased in my ETSY shop, the link is on my side bar.

The Printed Word

I have an addiction to decorating books.  One that I am trying to overcome :-).

It seems by looking at the titles of these books below, that I was at one time very interested in Cottage Style Decorating, Country Style Decorating, Shabby Chic Style Decorating, Flea Market Style Decorating, Prairie Style and Vintage Style Decorating.

The funny thing is....I never decorated my home in cottage, country,  shabby, flea, vintage or prairie styles....

These books are all heading to my booth at Needful Things on Friday.  They are priced between $1.00 and $8.00.  So if you are in the Asheville/Hendersonville area of NC and are in need of some decorating books, stop by!

A New Blog Worth Visiting

I recently received an email from a new blogger asking about the leaded glass window in my master bath.  Her name is Nancy and her blog is called The Natural Ingredient.

Nancy describes herself this way, "I love all things in their natural state and am inspired but it's simple beauty."

She has just begun blogging, but she has some wonderful topics in mind.  If you love learning more about:
(all photos on this post from The Natural Ingredient Blog)

Bee Keeping

Organic Bread Making

Rush Seat Weaving

Or just see the beauty of nature in snow...go visit Nancy at The Natural Ingredient.

Nancy has been organic all of her life.  She is a massage therapist too.  She plans on posting all about living organically including posts on "things ranging from when and how to spray trees to what's the best herb for PMS and so on".

Sound interesting?  I think so!  Head on over and make Nancy feel welcome.  You can click, here to go to her blog.  Tell her Penny sent you.  Sign up as a follower on her blog so you don't miss any post!

Do you have a favorite color that you have used every time you remodel or redecorate?

I do.  Mine is red.

Even, if I have a room that I swear will not have red in it, it comes sneaking in.

Even if it is just a pillow, or some red roses.

What is your favorite color, that keeps showing up in your home?

P.S.  I have heard that very soon, if you don't have a "blogger" blog, you will not able to follow me through Google.  So, if you have Typepad, Wordpress or any blog other than Blogger, please sign up on my sidebar to follow under the new Linky Follower.  Thanks!

"Tray" Chic

I have been looking for a large, low sided tray to set on my coffee table for a while.  Originally I was looking for a wicker tray, but the only ones I could find in the large size that I wanted cost around $80 and that was more than I wanted to spend.

Yesterday I was in Pier One and saw a larger wicker tray for $49 and as I debated whether or not to buy it, I spied a tray that was wood and leather, buried under the wicker trays.  I dug it out and loved it at first sight.

I love the combination of wood and leather.

It has a vintage look about it.

The details are wonderful.

And the best part?  It was on sale for $24.00.

I also wanted to show you the new fireplace screen we got a few weeks ago at Target.  We had needed a screen since we bought the house 2-1/2 years ago.  But they all were between $100 - $200.

This one was on sale for $35.00!

It just goes to show you, if you wait and search long enough, you just might find what you are looking for!

She has had a total makeover from top to bottom.  The drawers are painted in Louis Blue and the base of the chest is painted in Old White.  Both clear and dark waxed were used.

This is what Annika looked liked before I started.

I painted the knobs and handles in hammered bronze.

She looks a lot Swedish and a little French to me.

Making My Own Sunshine Today

You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine,
You make me happy,
When skies are grey....

Having to make my own sunshine today...we have grey skies here.

I am also painting this beauty...

Come back in a few days and I will show you how it turned out.

Do you have sunshine today?
How do you spell "Grey"?  or "Gray"?

Weekend Plans

Armand, the Rooster is guarding the rosemary in my potager.

The rosemary, other herbs, garlic and Swiss Chard are the only things growing in my potager this time of the year.  I am looking forward to playing in the dirt in a couple of months.

We have friends coming for the weekend.  We plan on going to the Biltmore Estates.  What are your weekend plans?

Violas and The Winner

I am fortunate that I live in a climate where you can grow some flowers in the winter time.  Here, in the mountains of NC, Violas love the cooler weather and do quite well.

I finally removed my small Christmas evergreen trees from the urns at my front door.  It their place, I planted some Violas.

I chose red and yellow.  I actually HAD to pick these particular ones.  Want to know why?  They had my name written all over them.

No, seriously, they really did have my name on them.  See the stakes below.

Ok, on to the business at hand.  The winner of the Country Home magazines is Kelly of Essence of Home.  She was the 8th comment on the giveaway post.

Kelly said...
Oh.....please pick me!! I would LOVE to have those. I miss that magazine so much. Maybe it will come back one day like Victoria did. I can't believe you're going to part with those. Thanks for this fun giveaway!
Congrats Kelly.  I will contact you for your mailing address.
