Niches or Nooks

Let's talk niches or nooks.  Do you have any in your house?  We have two in our new home.  One on either side of the foyer.  Sorry for the bad picture.

I wasn't sure what I was going to do with these.  I did some searching through some of my French Country decorating books and magazines, as well as on the Houzz.com.  Here are some of the different ways they are treated.

all photos except the top one from houzz.com

I think I am going to like having a couple of niches to play with.

We spent the weekend meeting with flooring and painting contractors.  We are taking up the carpet in the dining room, den, great room and hallway in our new home and having hardwood laid to match the existing hardwood in the kitchen and foyer.

We are also having someone paint the foyer, great room and stairway to the bonus room, because the ceilings are too high for me to reach.  I will be painting the rest of the rooms.

Well, back to packing!

Those niches would scare me. Glad that you are looking forward to playing with some ideas for them. I know that you are equal to the task. Happy packing!

I do have a niche, Penny. It's called the upstairs guest bath! :o)

Niches are so hard to figure out. I home I visited recently had put reclaimed barn wood on the back of theirs. It was beautiful but probably a little too rustic for your liking. I know whatever you decided todo will be beautiful.

We have three in the entry of our new house. There were 4 but we had one taken out! Two are situated kind of like yours and one is up high at the 2nd level. I do have artwork being framed right now for one of the niches and I'm thinking flowers in the other. It has bothered me because whatever is in a niche like that needs to be extra special...seems like to me anyway. I can't wait to see what you come up with. :)

I don't have any of those niches in my home but think they are a great look in a home. I'm sure you will come up with just the right items to display in there. Maybe some of your french confit pots?

I am so excited for you moving into your new home...and a little jealous too. I love my house, but would really love a new one to decorate!

Hi Penny! My house is old and I don't have any niches. I'm sure with your wonderful decorating skills you'll make yours gorgeous.
I'm so excited for you.
Be a sweetie,
Shelia :)

Penny, never had any niches, but do think they would be fun to have. They can certainly offer some drama.
Congratulations on the new house. This is exciting!

And so the fun begins! I don't have any niches but I love unique details like that. Sounds like you are off to a great start on personalizing the new home:>)

see you there! said...

Don't have niches myself but I trust you will do something very attractive with yours. We live in earthquake country so I would be concerned about what I put in a niche, of course something like a painting that could be hung securely would work.

Still can't believe you are moving again Penny. Seems like just yesterday you were settling in! Good luck with the move and enjoy making all of those fun choices!

Smart, Penny! Get the flooring and painting done before you get in there. While I love our new wood floors, what a pain to move things around to get it done. It had to be done in stages so furniture could be moved from one area to another. We weren't going to paint at all, but then realized it really needs it. That's a 2013 project and we will have someone do that; like you the ceilings are high and I only go up 3 rungs on a ladder. : )

I like the niches, and especially like the treatment with art work - not so fond of the large floral arrangements. I'll bet you have a lots of art and more than a few bits of sculpture and porcelain that would do nicely.

Looking forward to seeing all the changes you make to make your new house "your" home! I know it's going to look beautiful!

Oh, how fun to have all this dreaming to do. I, too, am glad you have niches to play with. Because I just know you will share.

No niches or nooks in our home, but I think I do have a few niches and nooks in my body. ;-)

I have seen a few displaying a single piece of art, and I almost always like that look.

Penny, My son's previous home had three niches on the wall going up the stairs. They put three similar antique vases in them. I have also seen shelves added. I really like the picture with the corbels underneath.

Hi Penny, I am impressed with the entry way and I love the niches too. I'm thinking paintings. Whatever you do will be beautiful Penny.

I have a really big niche. The old owners had junk in it but when we moved in we had glass shelves installed for my crystal collection. My niche is 6 feet tall and about 5 feet wide and 2 feet deep so lots of space for my collection.

Whatever you decide about the nooks I'm sure it will be perfect. I think your hardwood installation is so exciting! Excellent decision.

Niches would be fun to play with! I can see them all dolled up at Christmas. Mimi

Hi Penny!

How exciting to be moving to such a fabulous home... the views - WOW! Love the niches you have in your foyer/hall area. I personally like to see niches with very natural arrangements in vases or simple orchids. There's something about the architecture of an orchid that speaks volumes.

Happy packing! Hugs, Sherry

I had a niche like that in a house once and it confounded me, probably because it wasn't the kind of house that should have had such a thing. I like the ideas you have gathered here.

It will be fun seeing what you do with the niches.

I always thought a niche would be a hard thing to use so Ill be interested to see what you do with them.
