"Moving" Right Along

Yesterday we got the appraisal on the house.  It was good :-).

So we are moving right along.  Remember when I bought my last house?  While waiting to close, I showed you pictures of what I wanted to do to some of the rooms?  For example, in my last house I showed you a before pic, an inspiration pic from a magazine and then finally the finished room.  Here is a link to one of those posts.

So I thought I would take you through my decorating thought process again.  Luckily this house doesn't need the extensive remodeling the last house did.  This one just needs painting, hardwood floors, landscaping and decorating, whew!

For now, until we close, I am just planning and dreaming.  Let's start with the front door, OK?

Here is the front door now.  I know some of you thought it was red, but it is actually a stained wood.

The house is light gray.  Right now the railings are a dark gray, but they need to be painted and we will paint them white to match the columns.  The house is a Cape Cod style house, and I like gray and crisp white for that style.

I am going back and forth on whether to paint the door red or black.  The wood just seems out of place for this house.

Here is a similar door in red.

And a similar door in black.

One other thought is, do I paint the whole door surround the same color like below?  Or trim it out in white, like the pictures above...decisions, decisions.

Looks like I am starting my house whispering :-).

p.s. there is a great Velvet Pumpkin give away going on at Art by Karena.

I love the idea of a red door with the sidelights white. It would really stand out! Can't wait to see what you decide!

I love the black door with the white surround. I love a black door!

You'll get no help from me. As you may recall, I painted my doors green based on what the Sherwin Williams guy liked. Ha! You're going to make this home your own as you always have and it will be beautiful and I will be in awe of the process and the end product.

Well, whatever you choose will be perfect! Can't wait to see more!

I love how you jump right in, Penny! I am so indecisive...I like both the red and black, maybe the red will pop a bit more against the gray. I would definitely trim it out in white.

Jane

I have a gray sided house with white trim and I recently painted our front door a deep cranberry. I like it up close but from down by the street it looks almost black. That's how deep of a red it is. On your door my opinion is to paint the sidelights or whatever they are called a crisp white and then black or a red would be good on the door. YOu have lots of fun decisions to make! It's hard to wait, isn't it?~Hugs, Patti

I like the black because it is classic but the red will stand out more from the road. Either one I think will be fabulous Penny.

Such an exciting time...and stressful, too, I'm sure! Whatever you decide to do, I'm sure it's going to look fabulous!

Any of the combinations you showed us would be lovely Penny. I sort of lean to the white trim around the door, but the black door with black side panels does look very formal and elegant. But then, there's something so cheery about a lovely candy apple red door -- especially here in Washington State, where the winters get rather dark and rainy. Can't wait to see what you do to make the house your own. Please do keep us posted. My house is white and our front door is dark forest green, by the way, with a brick front porch, and black light scones. xoxox

My two cents...paint the door black and the surround white.

Of course I like the red. But the black looks awful nice too.

I'm partial to a black front door with white trim (or trim color that matches the rest of the trim). But, that's because I love muted colors on the outside of a house. Especially since your home is in the mountains, I like the look of a natural color palette.

I like the black door with the surround in white.

Hi Penny,

Congratulations. I am glad that things are moving along now. I think you are in the middle of joy when you are decorating. Your house whispering reaches the globe with your blog. I am one of those who adore everything that you do.

Happy pumpkins. My daughter just bought me the most gorgeous Cinderella pumpkin for my front steps. This Saturday is Show off your Autumn on Pink Saturday. So, I think i'll share it then.

Have a great evening.

Hi Penny! Oh, I'm so proud for you on your new house, it's beautiful! What a lovely front door too. I just love red and can see it on your door, but you're so good at all you do - whatever you decide will be just perfect.
Thanks so much for popping in to see me.
You are the sweetie,
Shelia ;)

I vote for a red door with white trim. :-) I'm sure whatever you choose to do though, it'll be beautiful.

I love the door trimmed out in white, it's so Cape Cod. I covet your porch, I must admit it.

I'm voting black and done as it is in the last photo you show. I definitely like your painting plans for the porch rails.

We just got our new front door and I'm painting it red. The trim will remain white. Our old door was black. Our neighbor said she couldn't tell if the door was open or not with the black paint. An open front door was a signal for the coffee is on; come on over.

I love a red door! But on the other hand, my door was barn red (and faded from the sun) when we moved in. Now it is bright purple! I will say that it is very Cape Cod/Nantucket to have a very bright door with the understated natural gray shingle and white trim. So the question is are you going for a traditional look or a Comforts of Home statement?

Hi Penny, Beverly and I did have a wonderful visit this past weekend. Home feels good though and we too are having some color changes.

Hmmmmm, your front door is beautiful but I think painting it red would look great. I like the side panels white. I'm glad you do not have a huge makeover challenge with this new home as well. You will make it beautiful without a doubt. Smile.

It is all so exciting, Penny, and I am happy for you.

Our house is light gray with white trim and black shutters. Our front door and surround are white. I like it because whatever the seasonal decorations, they really stand out.

I love your idea of a red or black door. My preference is the black doo with the white surround, but I know I will love whatever you choose.

You are going to have so much fun with this house. I'm glad you're sharing the process with us.

My vote would be for the black door trimmed in black. I think it makes more of a statement against the pale house. But I'm in the minority here, I see.

I love the door and sidelights on your new home. Wish I could add sidelights to mine - but I can't. The white surround makes the door 'pop'. Can't wait to see what you decide.

Congrats! I think if you paint the door red it will still look very similar to the stained door you currently have...LOVE the black door with white sidelights...it will bw awesome with the grey and white elsewhere.

Cheers,

Ann

My new house's front door in Colorado is stauned wood and I will have to make the same decision, Penny.

I look forward to seeing what you do as you will probably move in before I do --I am still trying to sell my Brooklyn house.

I think the door is beautiful as is. Love the idea of painting the rails white. As for the color of the door, I think either the red or black would be great, but unlike most everybody else, I think I would paint the door and the surround the same color, it makes such a huge statement. With the sidelights different, you lose some of the impact, in my opinion. But is is a beautiful house, and I have no doubt you will make the right choice. So glad the appraisal is good!
