Kitchen Table or Kitchen Lounge?

As you all know, for the past several years, Mr. Comforts and I have bought many homes to House Whisper to.  We would live in them, fix them up, tweak them a little more and then after 2-5 years we would sell them and start all over.

Now we are ready to buy our forever home.  I won't have to worry, if the next buyer will like what I have done or not.  I can be totally me.

Since my children all long grown and on their own, I have been giving a lot of thought about the need for two eating areas in our home.

Most homes have a kitchen dining area and a formal dining area.  Here was our kitchen eating area at our last home...

and here was our formal dining room in our last home...

In our next home, I don't want a kitchen dining area.  I want a kitchen lounge area.  Similar to this idea below...

Mine will not be this formal, but you get the idea, right?  A place to sit, read the paper and have a cup of coffee in the morning.  A place for guests to sit, sipping a glass of wine and nibbling on appetizers while you finish up dinner.  Notice the comfy seating and the lower than dining height, table?

I am going to have fun finally creating a home just for the two of us.

  1. I would love something like that! Right now we do not have a kitchen eating area, but we do have a wall of bench seating under the wall of windows. Not really sure I like that, but that's how the previous owners did it. Very nice idea you have!

  2. I would love that idea. Wish I was planning a new home.

  3. I so agree Penny! Although we only have a dining room now, in our next home we relly want an area to sit and spend time together over coffee. Sometimes a dining table is so big that it's hard to get that intimate feeling of togetherness that you would in a little coffee shop. Lol, I hope I'm making sense! At any rate, we want our next home to have areas that promote hanging out together, face to face, and easy conversation. I love this idea for your forever home! Maybe I can glean some ideas from what you do:>)

  4. I think it's a great idea that you are collecting all your inspiration pictures now, Penny. With Pinterest I'm sure it's easier, too, not having to cut pictures out of magazines. It sounds like a great idea. I always thought our formal dining area was a wasted room, yet we still needed it those couple of times a year. I would have loved to have made mine a library with a table that could have butterfly leaves to extend it. That would have been my plan if we hadn't moved when we did.

  5. I agree after all this moving you should make your home exactly like you want it. after 17 homes, thats what I did and I love it. when I'm no longer here, this home will be given to someone who needs it. That'll be my last gift, after I'm gone.

  6. I know you, and your so creative and handy dear one, will build an amazing home Penny. The two of you make such a perfect creative team, and all your work is first class!

Sadly (altho' financially it helps!) I've lost my kitchen breakfast area which became Bob's home office of sorts. Of course he has another upstairs but for some reason prefers being down here much of the time! When he retires AGAIN, I may consider something like you suggest, more a comfy spot with a couple of easy chairs and low table just for relaxing with coffee or tea. The big window looks out onto the deck and gazebo which is a nice view. We have our small dining room too - so don't require another eating place.

So I say go for it when you are designing your space - I'm loving the one in the photo - look at that fabulous floor and fireplace!

Thanks for the recent positive comments on the Africa animal pics dear - more coming up of some well known guys!

    Love, Mary

    P.S. Anymore bear sightings?

  7. I'd choose the lounge area, Penny. In fact, I did exactly that until we built a room off the kitchen some years ago. The truth is that we rarely use the kitchen table and it has become a collector of flotsom and jetsom. There was something lovely about two wing chairs and a side table - and we had a small tv there too. If I could do it again, I'd add a fireplace and a beautiful old bookcase. Maybe in our next house too!

  8. What I love most about that kitchen area is a kitchen fireplace...way cool...perhaps it would be two-sided and also be viewed from the living room area or the dining room area. I like this idea a lot. You must be having a lot of fun analyzing exactly what you want in a home...what worked for you or what didn't. Interesting...

  9. Hi Penny! I'm excited for you to find your forever home! Everything you've done in your past two homes has been wonderful and I know you'll make your next one the most gorgeous! I just love your style.
    Be a sweetie,

  10. Hi Penny!
I'm back after taking a hiatus this summer to spend some much-needed time with my family. I'm so excited for you and your hubby! Can hardly wait to see everything come together! Let the adventure begin!

  11. I think you have a great idea here, Penny! I love seeing upholstered furniture at a dining table and the look and feel of a spot to relax in rather than just eat. Are you looking to build your own home or buy? It's all so exciting!

    XO,
    Jane

  13. Your example photo looks so inviting, Penny! It must be exciting knowing you will be going to your "forever home" next move! I'm going to be asking you for moving tips in a few months :)

I have an "eat in" kitchen now plus a formal dining room, and my new house will have the same -- I like having the choice to use either area. I am very excited that my Colorado house has a small terrace off my upstairs master bedroom, and I have visions of putting a few comfortable chairs there and having my morning cup of coffee up there on summer days while I read the newspaper.

  14. Go for it Penny! You should have what ever you want in your forever home! :)

  15. I think you must be going to build so you get it just right! I like the little sitting area for coffee...which is quite different from the higher "bar" tables or whatever they are called. This is more inviting! Have fun planning! And by the way, I like your replacement three tiered basket much better!

  16. A kitchen lounge area sounds like a great idea to me. Everyone loves to hang out in the kitchen, why not make it as comfortable as possible?

  17. I would love that. Such a great idea!!! Almost like a cozy restaurant by the fireplace. Can't wait to see what you get. I am living vicariously through you :)

  18. That is perfect for the two of you. Since you don't have kids living at home, you can really customize the home to fit your needs and do away with some of the standard house designs that are everywhere. The planning stage is the most fun part!

  19. Hi Penny, Ihad a formal dining in my previous house and it rarely got used. I only have one dining table in this house which is adjacent to my kitchen but off this room I have my family room which is where everyone hangs out. I do have a formal lounge room though as most of the time hubby and I like to watch different tv shows. Your idea sounds lovely and really we have to make our homes comfy and suit our own lifestyles. take care, Maryann

  20. I love the kitchen lounge idea Penny. My husband thinks everyone should have a formal dining room, so I would have to work with him on this.

How fun to be able to make your home YOUR home and not worry what the next buyer will think. I've been in that same position many, many times and know what you're talking about. I'm looking forward to our "last" one too.

  21. I am in agreement with you, Penny. And, I would love to come sit in just such a place with you.♥

  22. WE have done this, too, being without any children or little people who visit. The breakfast area in my house is pretty small -- 7 x 12 -- and a big table in here for just the two of us made no sense. After I inherited a Frenchy sofa from my two late aunts, I slipcovered it and put it in that area with a two-top table and two chairs. We like the arrangement ever so much better.

  23. I love that idea! Makes me want to be one of your guests!

  24. This is pretty much what I have done with our little breakfast area, Penny. Just a small table for two...at the end of my kitchen. We have a large dining room so we don't eat "in the kitchen" but when company is here, many times, they sit at the little table while I finish up our dinner. I used to have a larger table there but when we added on to our living room, I did away with that table and added the smaller one.
I think you will love having this space you mention.
How fun to be designing a new home. I've never lived in a new house. In fact, in the over 50 yrs of marriage, we've lived in only 3 houses. :))
    Have fun with it.

  25. This is exactly what I have in mind for our next place. We haven't used the dining room much in our present home and decided the next one does not need to have two dining areas. I saw photo of a "breakfast room", but it was more like a lounge/dining area. That is what I am going for,if we are lucky enough to get our house sold.

  26. i like the idea of a kitchen lounge area...afterall, the kitchen is where everyone tends to hang out and the formal dining seldom gets much use. so why not have a large two-in-one room. great idea!
