Country Living and More

Do you still subscribe to magazines?  Which ones? I am taking a poll on my side bar and I would love to know your answer.

Taking the poll is anonymous.

If you would like to elaborate in the comments below, that would be wonderful.  What do you look for in a magazine?  Decorating advice, recipes, gardening, craft projects?  Other reasons?

Welcome Home,

  1. Stopping by a bit late but the wishes are the same. I hope you had a wonderful Christmas. Yes, I still subscribe to a few magazines. There's something special about sitting with paper and photo and a good cup of something warm.

  2. I subscribe to CL, though when that subscription runs out, I'll be moving to something else. I've not been pleased by the changes in CL and am looking for something that feels the way it did a few years content, paper quality, and magazine size.

  3. Hi Penny, I thought this was an interesting poll so had to see which magazines.

Up until recently, I did subscribe to CL, TH, BH&G, and SL. As the subscriptions ran out, I chose not to renew.

My biggest disappointment with a magazine was Southern Living. It was 180+ pages, and now it averages 80. I don't even buy it from a newsstand. I loved the multi-page spreads of homes and decor and all the recipes. It was scaled down to Sesame Street snippets, IMHO. You know, just a single page with a picture or a blurb so one could move on to the next thing.

When my all quilting magazine subscriptions end, I will not renew them either. I have years of them in magazine holders and will never in my lifetime make everything.

A non-quilting magazine I do subscribe to is Mary Jane's Farm. I really like it and will have to think hard about renewing when it finishes.

Just tooooooo much "input" for my brain.
So, I'll go over and vote for "other."

  4. I get Coastal and Midwest Living as well. My son and daughter in law subscribed to Birds and Blooms for me.

  5. HI Penny! No, I don't subscribe to mags anymore as I've been so disappointed in them and sad as some of my favs have stopped.
I hope you had a wonderful Christmas.
    Be a sweetie,
    Shelia :)

  6. I don't subscribe to as many. But I still like to get CL, Time Magazine, and BH&G.

  7. How interesting! Looks like I'm missing out on Country Living! It's number one right now! I hope you enjoyed a wonderful Christmas! ♥♥♥

  8. Hi Penney.

I dont subscribe to any magazines anymore either. There's so much genius here in blogland, that it seems a waste of money. I have noticed in the last couple of years, that THEY seem to be watching Us.

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas.

  9. I subscribe to TH and BHG. I love Veranda too. but for some reason, I haven't subscribed. Many because they have too many ads. I also love Elle Decor and House Beautiful - but I am not a subscriber. Just an occasional buyer.

Great idea to do this poll!

  10. I took CL for about 20 years, but like all the rest, they just have too many advertisments. So I won't be renewing. I like articles, with pictures. Same on the quilting front, although my favorite is BH&G American Patchwork and Quilting, I probably won't renew. I buy a magazine at the store once in a while, but recycle all magazines with girlfriends.

  11. I used to subscribe to SO many, as the prices were lower that way. Now I buy them as I see fit. I like a little of everything in my magazines so I buy or subscribe to Redbook, Ladies Home Journal, Better Homes and Gardens, Oprah and Country Living. When I subscribe to a magazine, I feel the pressure to read it in a certain amount of time and with several coming in the mail, I wasn't getting to my books. So I have let a few subscriptions go and now I choose month by month what I'll buy.

Hope you had a wonderful Christmas, Penny! And I hope we get together next year!

  12. Penny
I subscribed to Country Living and Mary Jane for years. But I find that now that I have become a blogger I get better ideas from my fellow blogger friends.
I do occasionally pick up a specialty magazine still.
    Happy New Years!!

  13. I subscribe to two magazines each year and if they disappoint me I select two new ones the next year. I am fickle that way. :-))

  14. I have always been a magazine junkie, but I am letting my scripts expire without renewing. I get so much more inspiration from blogs now.

  15. Let's see...I subscribe to Romantic Country, Country Living....I think that is the only 2?? Once in a while, I will buy a certain magazine off the shelf but not very often anymore. The prices have really skyrocketed!~Hugs, Patti

  16. I subscribe to quite a few when they offer a good deal. I look at the decorating sections mostly, but also like cooking and gardening too. I still love the surprise of getting a magazine in the mail mixed in with the bills. I walk in the door, toss the bills on the table and immediately open the magazine and enjoy it!

  17. I subscribe to Country Living and FOLK. I miss Cottage living desperately. I do also buy SOMERSET home and a few of their others also. But mostly just surf blog land for inspiration.

  18. Just had this conversation with a friend and neighbor this afternoon. Traditional Home is the only mag I currently have a subscription for, but I will buy Country Living, Country Home, and a few others at the news stand when I see something I like. I also pick up copies of magazines at our local library that others leave to recycle. It's a great service. ~ Sarah

  19. I don't subscribe to any Penny but I always pick up the newest edition to my favorites like Country French.

  20. My favorites are UK Country Living (English) and Campagne Decoration (French) and I have had subs. to them for years from ExpressMag of Canada - good company to do business with. Of course imported mags. are a bit expensive, but they are shipped on time and never late or missing, so worth it! Sometimes I buy an issue of Cote Sud from an independent bookshop (like to support them) because the photography is beautiful and I love the south of France homes.

My subs. to Victoria, Romantic Homes, BH&G, Elle Decor, MS Living, and a few others, are gradually not being renewed - I don't really enjoy them anymore.

I must say I am looking forward to FiFi O'Neill's' new magazine, soon to be available - that's one amazing woman when it comes to decorating and finding beautiful places to photograph! Wish I had her energy!

When in Australia recently I found some nice home decor mags. which were refreshing - more like ours used to be. There are also other really lovely English/French/Canadian home mags. which show new looks and accessories. Again they are a bit costly, but now and then worth the splurge.

Interesting reading Penny..........even better than many of the mags, ha! ha!

Hugs - and New Year blessings.
    Mary X

  21. I love magazines! I like keeping up to date with decor and food, especially. But like inspiring articles too.

  22. No subscriptions but I do occasionally buy a magazine when I'm traveling - something to thumb through. Usually it is one of the creat/art related type.

  23. Only kid magazines for my girls and am phasing those out. If I want one I go for coffee and get one at B&N to bring home. By the way like your Chinese grain bucket. I have several myself; one for magazines and one for potaoes and onions.
    Merry Christmas!
Linda @ bushel and a pickle

  24. I use to get a lot of magazines! With all the wonderful blogs there is no need.

  25. Hi, Penny, we are currently inundated with mags!
    We subscribe to:
    - O, the Oprah magazine
    - Country Living
    - Country Homes & Interiors (British edition)
    - In Style
    - Glamour
    - Victoria
    - National Geographic
    - Popular Science
I'd feel guilty if a lot of these weren't gift subscriptions from family and friends! Most, I pass on to others -- but the Country Homes & Interiors and Victoria's I keep.
    Hugs, Carol

  26. Hi Penny,
I'll be interested to see what your poll turns up. I subscribe to Coastal Living & More magazines -- I suspect if I had an IPad I'd let the paper subscriptions expire.

  27. I subscribe to Victoria and The Herb Companion.

  28. I subscribe to way too many! - Country Living, Southern Living, Traditional Home, Better Homes & Gardens, Coastal Living, Caribbean Travel & Life, House Beautiful & Oprah. I probably forgot one or two also! Even though there is so much to see online, I still love having the paper ones to flip through! The problem is that I can never part with most of them! I hope you had a wonderful holiday! Best wishes for a happy and healthy new year!

  29. When I first came to Kuwait, I used to get British magazines because they were cheaper to buy, Country Homes & Interiors, Homes & Antiques and one other I can't remember the name of. Now, because of censorship and the difficulties of getting anything through customs, I can't find any decent magazines half the time. I just bought a Martha Stewart Living Thanksgiving magazine -- even though December is almost over, there has not been one Christmas magazine to be found at all. :/ Happy holidays! Tammy

  30. I have always been such a fan of magazines, I still get Country Living, (as a treat!) becasue it was such a bargain! But more and more I see how fresh everything is in blogland, compared to the magazines. Trends start here and end up there. You can find great ideas daily online rather than monthly. I'll always love looking through the magazines, but I wonder if their days aren't numbered!

  31. I still get Better homes and Gardens and Country Living. Now what I look for is things to copy for my party LOL!

  32. Penny, I subscribe to Country Living and Traditional Home. My favorite blogs offer such beautiful designs that I don't read decor magazines as much.

  33. I have started getting all of my magazines on my Nook Color, except for Victoria, which I still get a paper copy of. I love all sorts of home and garden magazines ~ nothing too modern or too rustic are really my only parameters.
