Got Magazines?

A few posts back I did a post on decorating books.  I know I am a decorating bookaholic.

But I have to confess, I love magazines too.  Decorating magazines to be exact.  I had some favorites, that are no longer being published.  But I still find a lot that I love.

My tastes have changed over the last couple of years.  I seem to be gravitating towards more traditional style decorating magazines.

I also love this magazine....even though it it not a decorating magazine.
I keep some magazines for a year.  Then go through stacks of them on rainy days, and tear out pages to put in a decorating file.
I subscribe to Veranda, Elle Decor, Traditional Home, House Beautiful, Country Living and Wine Spectator.

What magazine do you buy?  Do you save them?  Do you tear out pages and put in a file?  I would love to know!
Welcome Home,
Penny

I have the same passion about mags as you do. I love Country Living, Country Sampler and other assorted decorating mags. I get Were Women Create and Artful Blogging and card making and also some scrapbooking magazines. In fact, I did a post about how I keep up with them all a few posts ago if you want to check out my blog. I love to see what women are reading. Thanks for sharing.

I only recently subscribed to a couple of magazines, but I just don't find or MAKE the time to really read them. I'm more of a 'flip thru the pages as quickly as I can' sort of gal. Lame, I know... I think it's A.D.D. or something similar to it. I used to get Southern Living and loved it, I like Country Living too. Right now I am enjoying Real Simple.

I keep them for a year and then toss them in the recycle bucket.

I get all of the same ones Penny, except the wine one. I keep mine longer than a year, sometimes they are over ten years!! I have a real problem I confess with my magazine addiction. I was also getting Cottage Living and Coastal Living...until recently.

I am obsessed with magazines. I know we are "supposed" to rip out what we like and get rid of them but I like looking thru them over and over. I just can't part with the decorating ones! Recently, people have been giving me gift subscriptions for birthday and Christmas so I get so many! Love em!

Southern Living is the only subscription I keep because of going back and forth so much. I read a lot of them on line too especially Coastal Living. My good friend down here gives me her Woman's Day when she's done but I usually just glance at it and put it in the laundromat here.

There's a great magazine over here in the UK called Homes & Antiques published by the BBC. It combines both my favourite subjects! I do buy other magazines and like many, keep them for ages to look through!

Oh yeah...I am a mag junkie too! I get Romantic Country Decorating, Romantic Homes, Country Living. I keep them for a long time but I have recently been going through bunches of them and getting rid of them. If I don't I might have to build on an extra room for them!~Hugs, Patti

I've enjoyed a subscription to Elle Decor (I got a free one for a year and it was uniquely different.) I've had a subscription to Country Living since the beginning of time, but I am not happy with the recent issues. I do not like the new size nor the new direction. It could be any old generic magazine and just doesn't look like Country Living any longer. I will probably let that one go. Of your stacks, I'm most intrigued by Veranda. As for me, I already have the check in the mail for Victoria. Not that it's a total decorating magazine, but because it's one to get lost in. I take it you've had some time for getting lost lately while your shoulder recuperates.

I decorate with my favorite magazines too! A pile here and a pile there-just makes a home look lived in! My favorites are Country Living, Victoria, Coastal Living and Southern Living.

Country Living and BHG for me. I also peruse Romantic Homes, Victoria, Traditional Homes, and anything else that looks good over a cup of coffee at Borders books, and buy the ones that really speak to me. I have a binder with page protectors that I fill with my tear outs. I actually have a stack of keepers in the living room and one in the basement that I am fighting with myself to discard. They really need to be gone through though before I do that.

At the moment I am subscribing to Country Living and Coastal Living. I pick up British Country Living and The English Home at Barnes and Noble. Also Traditional Home
I have some very old issues of Architectural Digest, I love. Much better in the old days. There are a few Country Living issues from long ago too. I sometimes tear out pages. Especially did that when we were planning our home.

I picked up a copy of Elegant Homes, at Lowe's yesterday. A tad pricey but worth it.

I've moved from primitive country, through a sort of euro traditional look (which had absolutely nothing to do with who we are), to now. I hope my present style reflects a more refined traditional or perhaps transitional lool.

Hi Penny, being in Australia I mainly subscribe to country home ideas. I have been collecting them since their very first issue came out about 4-5 yrs ago. I even attempted twice to stop subscribing (because their style was changing abit) but twice I rang up again to change my mind. so now I have a gazillion of them! Don't think I could part with them though. Sometimes if I'm at markets and see really cheap mags I buy them, rip out the pages I like and put them into a folder just like you. I also like to buy Romantic Country from your part of the world too! BTW good luck in my giveaway.. take care, maryann

I recently found Where Women Create...and loved it! Also in my stack of mags are: Flea Market Gardens, Romantic Homes, Country Sampler, Country Home, Small Room Decorating and Where Women Cook!
Usually I'm a flip through sort of person...but I read Where Women Create cover to cover. It is interesting to know what others like to read!

I'm currently subscribing to UK Country Living, Campagne Decoration (French) - they are my favorites, Romantic Homes, Victoria, and Country Living (which I've just canceled!). Somehow I get Martha Stewart Living - by default after another mag. was discontinued. I have started buying Jeanne d'Arc living now it's available in English - but I would classify it as more a book than a mag., especially at the price- but really worth it if one loves that Nordic look, and I do!

Of the discontinued mags. I miss most of all, Country Home, loved the format of that one - now they're just doing special issues but much is repeats of old articles. Also, was very sad to see Mary Engelbreit's great mag. close - it was a beauty.

Off to the West Coast tomorrow Penny - long weekend with lots of fun planned - I'll need to rest when I get back!

Hugs - Mary

Before all the free decorating inspiration on the internet, I used to be a magazine junkie. Now I don't buy too many magazines anymore--too much advertising and too little content imho, but I do almost always buy the special interest publication Cottage Style when it comes out once (or twice?) a year (no advertising on every other page!). Occasionally I'll buy Country French.

Most of the time I can't bring myself to tear out pages. I have found that even though something in the magazine might not appeal to me or work for me today, in a year or two, the very look, color, style, accessory etc. I barely noticed before could jump out at me later and be the exact inspiration or idea I need to start (or put the finishing touches on) a project. I can't tell you how many times I have picked up an old decorating magazine and seen something in it through new and appreciative eyes. :)

I subscribe to many magazines! Presently I get Better Homes & Gardens, Woman's Day, Family Circle, Martha Stewart Living, Country Living, Yankee Magazine, The New Yorker, Cucina Italiana, Food, The Food Network Magazine and Organic Gardening. I recently gave up my Mary Jane's Farm and Newsweek magazine subscriptions.

I'm a reader and I love browsing magazines whenever I am traveling on the bus or subway :) I do save special issues, articles, and recipes in a file cabinet, but honestly I hardly ever look at them again! I'm sure I will have to do a big clean out one day, but it's nice to know they are there!

I finally got my magazine hoarding under control. After reading them and cutting out recipes or pictures, I either give them to a friend or throw them out. I subscribe to Better Homes And Gardens, Oprah, Ladies Home Journal, More and Redbook. I pick up the rest at the store...Country Living, Romantic Home and Cottages And Bungalows. Sometimes I'm just not in the mood for decorating or vice versa. And I get tons of catalogs which read like magazines these days.

I am curious about Veranda. I have to leaf through it the next time I see it.

XO,
Jane

I love magazines but try to keep my interest under control by only (mostly!) buying them when I'm on business trips. I find that I really read them if I'm sitting in a hotel room or an airplane. I generally pass them along unless I see something that I'd definitely do, then I'll keep the issue as a guide. The only ones I consistently keep are Christmas issues of the UK Country Living, Traditional Home etc.

I enjoy looking through the magazines and love Veranda. I go to the library and check out magazines so I can stop collecting them in the house. I want to keep everyone I get, that stuff can pile up. I have noticed that there are more advertisements now and less magazine.
The one you have pictured called country french - have not as yet read, will be sure to give that a look.

Oh my yes! I have collected decorating magazines for years and years. At one time I had every Country Living Magazine from the late 80's forward. I finally had not choice but to get rid of some, and in fact I did just that a month or so ago. I decided that should something happen to me, no one would want to go through all those magazines. I still have plenty, but I did thin them out. This was a major thing for me. I told my daughter that I would try not to hoard them anymore.

I didn't tear out anything, just threw them away. Boo Hoo!

I don't know if I can compete with Pat from NY...she seems worse then me because I am Sue and I am a magazineaholic....the question is what DOn't I subscribe to?.....
Country Living since 1978....Southern Living...Coastal Home...Better Homes...Good Housekeeping...Bon Apetit...Food Network...Rachel Ray Everyday....Martha Stewart...Food and Wine and Cooking Light....and I'm sure I forgot something...I have 4 huge notebooks with recipes I have cut out...and one big decorating one for when I finally get my dream house....it's a sickness!!

I subscribe to Vicorian Homes, Romantic Homes, Country Living, Flea Market Style, Country Almanac, and one other that I can't remember the name of.... And I keep some forever - some I tear out the pages I want to, and I have a "dream book" that has it all in there! Thanks for sharing. Sandi

Hi Penny
I have been trying very hard to cut down on my magazine consumption. I currently only subscribe to Phyllis Hoffman's Celebrate. {6 a year} I buy tons at Christmas though and a few others that catch my eye during the year. I have had subscriptions to most of the ones you have though. I tear out my favorite houses and pictures and keep them in 2 loose leaf binders in page protectors. Fun to browse on a rainy day!
Have a great day and hope your shoulder is doing well.
Sue

Penny, I don't subscribe to as many magazines anymore. I still get Traditional Home and purchase others as I see ones that interest me. I saved all my Victoria magazines, my Mary Engelbreit Home Companion, and some others. At times I've pulled out entire articles about specific topics (such as French faience) that I keep in a notebook. Love both decorating books and magazines. I'm an addict. LOL

I subscribe to Our State, Victoria and Southern Lady. I have subscribed to others in the past, but I am disenchanted when almost the entire magazine is one advertisement after the other. I realize they are necessary, but I have a limit.

Don't even ask my hubby that question! I have always loved magazines, and will hold on to some for a long time. I think I even have some of the first Victoria! I am thinking of passing those on now. I love Romantic Country, Mother Earth News, Herb Quarterly, Wohen & Garten (which is my very favorite!), and Country Gardens. Yours are decorating, mine are more gardens. I love Euro magazines with their decorating and gardens, as a matter of fact my cousin's son is coming over in a few months, and I asked for more German magazines! It is time though for me to "get rid" of some, and I do the same thing by pulling out what I like. I can see though by reading comments I'm not the only one who loves magazines!
Hope you have a great weekend!

Oh, Penny...magazines are my largest weakness. I just LOVE them. I keep them forever. I really do. I just can't get rid of them. Oh, every now and then, I'll go thru ones like Better Homes and take out pages I might want to save and get rid of the rest. But, Country Homes, Country Living, Romantic Country..Southern Living...no way do I let any of those go..nor do I tear out. I just use stickies to mark my spots. :)))
I love so many different styles, I fear my house is beginning to look.....well....
goofy. :))

see you there! said...

Right now I don't have any subscriptions going. I do occasionally pick up Sunset as it has local CA info in it. I have quite a stack of old Victoria mags that I like to revisit occasionally. I don't tear out pgs to keep, I already have to much unorganized paper floating around :-)

Right now Veranda is my magazine of choice. I enjoy Romantic Homes,Elle Decor and Coastal Living also. I used to love Country Living but it has gone down in quality so I only buy it if it looks worthwhile. I'm so glad you mentioned Wine Spectator because I love that magazine too.
I used to save all my magazines but the last time I moved I got rid of them because it was just too much work to move them all.
