I'm Back!

Hi Everyone!  I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving.  I did!

I spent the week in Naples, Florida with my sisters, in laws, nieces, nephews etc.

We went to the beach.....

......and watched the sunset.

I am saving the rest of the pictures for January or February when we could all use a little warmth and sunshine!

I will be around to visit everyone as soon as I catch up on laundry.

Last year when we bought this house, I showed you the barren back yard, and told you my dreams of having a pergola and fireplace.

After spending a year here and working on the inside, we finally were able to start working on the outside.  You saw some of the work in this post.

We decided at this point to have a fire pit instead of a fireplace.  But guess what?

Mr. Comforts of Home started the PERGOLA today!

See that tall beam sticking out of the ground on the right of the flagstone patio?
Here is another view....you can see it on the left now.

Yep, that lonely post is going to grow up to become a Pergola soon.  I will show you pictures as it progresses.

fol·ly [ fóllee ]
Architecture eccentric building: a building of eccentric or over elaborate design, usually built for decorative rather than practical purposes.
Synonyms: foolishness, madness, idiocy, silliness, craziness, recklessness, irrationality, foolhardiness, imprudence.

I saw this while out and about this past weekend.
Don't you think we all need a little "folly" in our lives?  When was the last time you did something "silly"? I am going to do something silly today.  How about you?

Country Chic

This past weekend, my blog friend Jenn from Sweet Eye Candy Creations, came to Asheville to work on an amazing event that is happening next year.  It is called "Once Upon A Dream, A Prairie Fairytale Event".  To Learn more about it, click the link button on my sidebar.

While she was here, we got to spend the day together, driving around Asheville and the beautiful countryside surrounding it.

Shall I share a few North Carolina "Country Chic" pictures I took?  Please click on any picture to enlarge....especially the last one!

Look at this great vintage tractor!

A pretty end of fall view.

This bull got mad that we were taking its picture and walked behind a stand of trees, so we couldn't take anymore!

Want to come visit me for the day and see some more Country Chic?  I would love it!

Welcome Home,

So Where Was It?

I noticed two things on this Weekend ~ Where Is It.  First - it seems that cow pictures are not really popular.  This is the smallest amount of guesses since the Where Is It began :-).

Second, this was was a lot harder!  Out of 21 guesses, 16 guessed the first picture was Europe and 5 guessed the first picture was USA.

The correct answer is.....the first picture is USA.  Taken this past Friday at a farm in Weaverville, NC.  Here is the full uncropped version of picture number one.

And here is the uncropped version of picture number two.  This was taken in Provence, France, out of a bus window on the way to a beautiful Chateau and winery.

I hope you all enjoyed this weekend version of Where Is It.  Should we play again next weekend?

What I Have Been Working On

I have been busy in the studio for the last few weeks.  A friend of mine had this old bistro set, that needed some TLC and I needed some chair cushions made.  So we did a trade!  I made over her bistro set for her and she is making chair cushions for me.

Here is one of the chairs before.  The set had a mesh table top and mesh seats...

Here is the set now....

We are going to meet soon and trade, her newly remade bistro set, for my chair cushions.  When I get the cushions, I will post about them.

Pain Ordinaire (Basic Bread)

There is something about the cooler weather, that makes me want to spend more time in the kitchen.

Today, I baked some home made bread.

This cookbook, has all kinds of wonderful bread recipes.  From simple Tuscan bread, to French Baguettes.

I chose to make Pain Ordinaire - or Basic Bread.

The recipe suggested that if you wanted a more rustic style bread to substitute wheat flour for some of the white flour.  That is what I did.

It came out perfect!  Crispy, crunchy crust and a rustic tender interior.

Do you bake your own bread?  I think I might start doing this once a week.

So Where Is It?

This week was a little harder I think.  There were 39 guesses.  22 of you guessed the first picture was USA and 17 guessed that the first picture was in Europe.

The 17 that guessed Europe were correct!  Here is the info on the two pictures.

The first picture is in St. Remy de Provence in France.  This is the courtyard of the Maison de sante Saint-Paul de Mausole Asylum.  It was the place that Van Gogh came
to be "confined" by his wishes in 1889.  He stayed here 10 months and painted 143 paintings and more than 100 drawings during that time.  Some of the more famous are, Starry Night and The Irises.

The second picture is in Asheville, NC.  Some of you were correct in guessing it is at the Biltmore Estates.  Every September they design a beautiful flower "carpet" using more than 100,000 beautiful plants, creating the look of an oriental rug.  (I think I am going to have to stop using the Biltmore Estates as a USA pictures - to many of my NC friends are recognizing it! - And one friend from Australia!!)

This is a lot of fun!  Thank you all for playing along. Come back next weekend for another Weekend ~ Where Is It?

Fresh Pea Soup

I know many of us have had split pea and ham soup, made with dried peas.  Have you ever had fresh pea soup?

I hadn't until last night.  Our potager is still yielding veggies.  Broccoli, beets, carrots, lettuce and peas.

Lots of peas...

So I made fresh pea soup.  You can also use frozen peas for this recipe.  I changed the recipe a little...this is my version.  Here it is.

  • 4 cups fresh peas or 32 ounces frozen peas
  • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 1/2 cups sliced shallots (about 11 ounces)
  • 4 cups (or more) vegetable broth
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh tarragon
  •  Plain nonfat yogurt or sour cream, stirred
  • Small fresh pea sprouts*

Heat oil in heavy large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add shallots and sauté until golden and almost tender, about 7 minutes. Add peas, 4 cups broth, and tarragon; bring to boil. Reduce heat to medium and boil until flavors blend and peas are tender, about 7 minutes. Cool slightly. Working in batches, puree soup in blender until completely smooth. (I used my immersion blender) Return soup to same saucepan. Bring to simmer and thin with more broth by 1/4 cupfuls, if desired.

Ladle soup into 6 bowls. Drizzle lightly with yogurt or sour cream. Garnish with pea sprouts.
*Available at natural foods stores and Asian markets.

(forgot to take a picture...this picture is from the recipe site Epicurious)
It was very easy and ohhh sooo yummy!
