Do You?

Do you have shoe molding at your baseboards? That little strip of wood that covers the space between the floor and the baseboard?

I do. And when it was re-installed after we had our floors refinished, it was left the original stain that matched the floors. See first picture below.

But, I think since it is molding and not flooring that it should match the molding, don't you? So today I started painting it....

In the picture below you can see how it looks in one area that is finished (3 coats later).

Much better! It makes the baseboard molding look more substantial too.
Welcome Home,
Penny

  1. We don't have it. Wish we did. You are so ambitious...that's quite a job painting it, after it's down! I like it painted.

  2. Our shoe molding (thank you for teaching me what it is called!) matches the walls. You were right.
    Everything is looking sooo good.

  3. We don't have it, either. We don't even have all of our baseboard installed yet after redoing rooms and flooring. It's cut and ready to go in the places where it needs to be installed but some needs to be primed and painted before installation. Shoe molding will come later when we have NOTHING else left to do!

  4. Yes we have it also. Living in a home that was built in 1879 we are lucky to have all the wonderful woodwork. It looks much better painted. Your doing a great job with your new home!

  5. Nice job Penny. We have it, and it's stained to match the flooring. It doesn't bother me enough to want to paint it to match my baseboard. In fact, we built our house and chose to have our shoe molding stained to match our floor. It's a matter of preference. Your shoe molding looks perfect painted and looked perfect stained. It's whatever the owner wishes. Job well done.

  6. I agree wholeheartedly, Penny. It's molding not flooring. It should match the molding or the cabinets in the kitchen or bath.

  7. Hi Penny,
Happy New Year to you and your dear family.
I like the base molding painted white too. You sure have come along way, everything looks so pretty and very well done. You should be patting yourselfs on the back, you and Mr. Conforts of Home have done a fabulous job!. Picture perfect!. Thank you so much for caring about me.
May all your dreams come true this year.
    Big hugs,

  8. We do have shoe mold and I like it. I think it makes it look more finished and it covers gaps between the floor and baseboard. Mine could use a fresh coat of paint. Originally I think all of my woodwork was painted with oil based paint. Not so sure what to do...need my dad!

  9. We have shoe molding also and it's painted the same as the other moldings.

Your home is beautiful, great job!

  11. Hi Penny
Oh my you sure have been very busy! I like it either way, I agree with Country Lady its a preference thing. You have to really like painting Penny to be able to get so much of it done. While I love decorating and doing all kinds of different projects I do not like painting walls...every time I do it, which has not been often I am so grateful I'm not a professional painter having to do that for a living.

Others like yourself seem to really enjoy it...and I wish I did because I really would paint my livingroom and bedroom.

    Thank you for sharing..
    have a lovely evening

  14. What a steady hand you must have! I would surely get it all over the floor! In Canada, we call it 'quarter round'.....probably because it is a quarter of a round piece of wood, I guess...not sure but sounds good to me!

  15. At first, I didn't think it would make any difference, but I see what you mean. Gosh, you're a bundle of energy!

  16. I am with you on that. Yes, you should have shoe moulding ( which I don't in most rooms) and yes, it should match the trim. Just looks better to me that way!

  17. Thank you for this posy Penny! In our first home we left it stained. Our last home did not have it I guess because the baseboards were like four-five inches high. This house we have it and I was debating painting them but not so sure. I think I will attempt it now because it does look so much nicer!

  18. Ours is the natural wood here in this house...it was painted in the last house we were in...so guess either way goes! I personally like it painted!
    BTW...what did your doctor say?

  19. We have it too and I agree it should be white like the rest of the molding. Looks beautiful!

  23. Yes and double yes! The base shoe should match the base molding! (No offense to those who like it matching the floor), but I think it looks soooooo much better the way you have done it! You've done a beautiful job!

I just finished painting the base & shoe in my bedroom and it was quick and easy--except for the crouching and crawling around on the floor part cuz my knees were hurtin' (I need to get those knee pad thingies).

  25. I have this in most of my rooms and mine are painted (what a job!!) --I agree with you that it looks better. However I hate the dust that all the trim work collects and it is time consuming to dust it the right way!! Have you found any tricks on this?

  26. Thank you!! I needed to see photos. Such a dilemma LOL

    I definitely prefer the painted!!
