I'm A Copy Cat.....(or Kitty)

I admit it. I am a copy cat...or copy Kitty. As in Kitty Bartholomew. Remember Kitty? Back in the good old days of HGTV? When they used to have a lot of wonderful decorating shows about cottage living and country living? Here is a picture of Kitty below, sitting in her living room. This picture is from the book Kitty Bartholomew's Decorating Style. You can purchase it from her website here. Click the pictures to enlarge them for better detail.
See the lamp table next to her chair? I LOVE that. I have been looking and looking for a vintage lamp table. All I could find for the longest time was gold ones with glass table tops....Then finally I found one! It came without a shade, and needed some tender loving care.
Here it is! I found the shade at Ballard Designs on sale.

I think if you compare it to the one that Kitty has, they look similar, don't you? She has a different shaped table and her shade is a tiny bit different, but the look is very close.

I also switched out the finial to this cute little rooster one.

The other lamp and table that used to be on that side of the couch has been moved down to the other end and I think it looks great there.
So call me a copy "Kitty", I don't mind. Someday I hope to have my couch and chairs slip covered too.
Welcome Home,
Penny

  1. Oh copycat shmopycat.....both your places look great! :) I do remember Kitty. She was a great designer on HGTV. There isn't much on HGTV nowadays dedicated to the "cottage style". I love that rooster finial and the lamp is so pretty. :)

  2. Your lamp is perfect; actually I prefer your rectangular table to hers. I do miss the first generation of HGTV shows and their hosts. It's hardly worth watching now.

  3. I love your lamp. I think it's even better than Kitty's. I miss her and I miss those old shows. Now just about all they've got is real estate crap and how much can you get for your house. Give me Kitty anyday. Mimi Sorry about the rant...

  4. I love your lamp/table! That's a much better way to use space than a separate table and lamp, I would think.

I'm just dying because I've had my Kitty Bartholomew book out this week!! Thinking about how much I miss her on HGTV. I've always admired that whole room. Wouldn't you love to have her greenish porch swing?

I do miss the old HGTV.

  5. Oooooooooooo, I love what you did. Do you ever watch that show where they take a million dollar look and recreate it perfectly? I love that show, and Kitty, yes that home show was terrific I remember Carole Duvall was on there too. I love what you did to your couch with those charming pillows. If I peek real close I think I see a rooster.

P.S. Do you ever watch the Painted House, I became addicted to that show when I lived in Toronto. Another great city of decorators.

  7. Hi Penny....great table lamp..I used to watch Kitty all the time...We lovingly called her "Skunky Bartholomew"....because of her hair...I never noticed before those marvelous yellow and white checked curtains....I love them !!!

  8. I love your new table lamp. The shade you have fits it perfectly and the rooster just sets it off.

I also like the old HGTV. I do still watch some shows. Devine Design and Colorsplash are two of my favorites.

    Have a happy day

  12. How perfect! I always love the complimentary lamps...instead of identical matching! You did a great job! You home looks so beautiful! I always loved all the decorating shows on HGTV. My hubby and I always watched Matt and Sherry, Room by Room!

  13. OH~~ I love it! I love the special touch with the rooster finial. I haven't hatched HGTV for a while because all the showes I liked are not on anymore. I could use the help now as I'm trying to trun my old world home into more of a cottage style. It's very hard for me to blend the two. That's why I enjoy your blog so much because it helps me.

  20. What a lovely vintage table lamp that you found! That lampshade looks just like Kitty's! Lucky you! It sounds like both the table lamp and the lampshade found the perfect home! :)

  21. Penny, Your lamp table is so much prettier than Kitty's! I always enjoyed watching whatever show she was on, then she kind of disappeared. Thanks for her website. ☺

  22. LOVE it! It looks so great in your room! The rooster finial is so cute. All I ever see are those brass and glass ones too. I loved her show so much! I don't know why they don't bring her back. They have so many unrealistic makeover shows now!

  23. Penny,

That reminds me that I bought that book for a friend a few years back...perhaps it is time to borrow it ( of course I studied it before I gave it to her,lol.). That lamp reminds me that there is one at the MIL's house. More chunky/rustic but perhaps I will bring it home and give it a makeover for the future TV/ exercise room. Yeah, I know it sounds like a dreadful combination of uses, but the "use what you have" philosophy reigns supreme.

Oh the table lamp is perfect! and the red lamp shade well it just makes it divine. I think it looks great along side your couch.

  25. Penny, you copycat all you want to because you do it so well! I loved Kitty Bartholomew and was just wondering why HGTV has changed all the shows to the more modern style? I miss her show and I miss Homes Across America! Maybe we more tranditionalists should write to HGTV and tell them we all don't do straight, some of us like lumbs and curves! lol
Oh, that lamp is beautiful and it does look just like hers! I need you to come help me. Everything you touch in your home turns out gorgeously!
    Be a sweetie,

  27. Penny, That is so beautiful. I just love it when something like that happens!

I have wanted to tell you...now that I have been blogging for one year, I think you were the first person to leave me a comment when my blog went "live". You told me you had dropped over from Daisy Cottage and were adding me to your list. That was so encouraging as a new and nervous blogger. I just wanted to say thank you. I really respect you and your artistic abilities. I enjoy seeing your creations on your blog and in the magazines I read. Thank you Penny! Maybe someday I will have the honor of meeting you. xo rachel

I loooove all your red touches! I absolutely adore your style! I always enjoy seeing your home! Nancy

  29. Hi Penny, I'm glad to know that I am not the only one who is missing the "old" HGTV when decorating was their top priority. Now I feel that it's the real estate channel. I loved Christopher Lowell and Kitty and all those how-to shows. Do you think they'd hear our plea? Remember DReam Drives? Oh, for the good shows to be back. I'd even setttle for reruns. 30. Count me in with the others who like your table better than Kitty's. I prefer the shape of yours.
I used to love to watch Kitty and also loved Matt & Sherry. I rarely watch HGTV anymore. Not thrilled with the direction it has taken.

  31. Hi Penny
First off I was soooo excited to read your comment to me. *hugs*. I can't believe you would send me a replacement after reading my blog. THAT is so very sweet. I will be VERY careful with this one!

I remember that show. It was great! Your lamp and shade look just like yours and looks so good on that table..it is much like hers as well. I love that colour...I use it in my place too but I just haven't acquired lamps in that colour..hmmm..maybe I need to keep my eyes open too.

I hope you have a lovely day Penny...you certainly have made mine!

  32. Hello dear Penny, Thank you so much for your faithful visits to my posts and your well wishes and prayers for my recovery. I am beginning to feel up to commenting although it is a slow process. Some days are better than others.

I love your yellow, white and red accent colors. I often spot a look I like and use it for my home. The lamp table is a great look and moving the little drum table to the other end is a great idea. I love the shade of red in both the lamp shades. With the rooster pillow and the red pillows. Walla, an even prettier look. She doesn't have your gorgeous 'red' china cabinet. smile!

    Hugs...Jeanne

  40. Ooohhh, I do remember HGTV in the beginning, with Kitty's decorating show! I love your lamp table, Penny...the red shade and rooster finial are the perfect finishing touches too. :-) I've no doubt that Kitty would approve, and be thrilled that you found inspiration in her style.

  41. Nice job Miss Copy "Kitty"! I'm so sure that Miss Kitty won't mind! Your table with new shade is stunning and may I add ...I love the rooster pillow!

I read somewhere recently ...to copy someone ...is to pay them a great compliment! So there Miss Kitty ...you should feel honored!

  42. Penny,
I love your lamp. It is perfect for your den. The little rooster finial made it especially perfect for you. I miss HGTV also. The shows just are not the same. I remember one that I use to love to watch...I think that it was called...Country Home? I can't believe that they took it off the air.

  43. Penny, my creative mother always said that every room needed something red (just ike every photo of a person/people to bring out the colors). You've done a great job in your beautiful room. When I had my silk lampshade business I was often requested to make red shades - they do look lovely in a room.

Oh Kitty - I miss her so much. There is not a single show I watch on HGTV now - they're mostly dumb and just show rush jobs which are so tatty looking! Couldn't they at least rerun some of the original shows so the younger gals into decorating can see what really works for their homes?

Shall we rally in the streets outside their studio!!!!!!!!!!

  45. Hi Penny
I loved the Kitty Bartholomew show. Now the shows on HGTV are all junk as far as I am concerend. That table looks so great. When I lved in PA I volunteered in a thrift/consignment shop and no one ever wanted those tables. I love them because they are so functional and I like the fact that the lamp light is up higher than if it was sitting on a table. You did a fab job with yours.

  47. Penny, Sweetie...you can copy anyone you want!! And you tell 'em I said so! Ok? :)
I am sooo jealous of your lamp with the red shade and that SWEET little finial!! (heavy sigh..) SO many adorable things and so little money! :) Not to mention time. :)
"YOU would HAVE it ALL!!" as Merle Streep said in Out Of Africa, and I am afraid she could be right when it comes to my home.

P.S. Penny, thank you for visiting my blog. I am honored! I truly am. I have not quit gotten my act together but I trying!

  48. I miss those country/cottage decorating shows! It seems like now everything is focused on selling a home or designs for rooms that are so modern they make me think "why would they do that?" I love your table Penny and it looks a lot like Kitty's :) I love when you show your rooms -there is something very serene about the way you decorate. Everything is well thought out and very very right.

    Hugs,

  55. Wonderful look Penny! I am lamp challenged. Lamps are one of those things that I just can't seem to choose. I just picked one up at a consignment shop and now I need a new lampshade for it, hope I like it when it's done!

  56. I loved Kitty, too. I was just sick when they took her show off. I always like Country Style, too.
    It's funny...I have a draft for a post entitled I AM SUCH A COPY KAT...HAHA...great minds, I guess...
I love your new, old floor lamp..I have one that was brown and I repainted it in RED...just love it, too. I'll post it sometime soon.
OOO, and you asked about the SUE belonging to the cute bath I posted on my Black and White post...she was "Can We Talk" once but has changed her blog name to something like A STITCH IN THYME...I can't find her, tho...If you do, holler and let me know the exact name of her blog, if you will.

  58. I posted a comment but lost it in the process. I hardly watch HGTV anymore..hate what they have on. Loved Lynette Jennings, Kitty Bartholmew, and Matt and Sherry. Even the gardening shows are few and far between anymore. Same for Food Network. Kitty would love that red lampshade and so do I!
